Flowing Water, Taoyuan International Watercolor Biennale, Taiwan

The 2023 exhibition theme, The Watercolor Feast, is inspired by the banquets hosted during special occasions in Taiwanese folk culture. The celebrations aim to build affectionate exchanges through the hospitality of sumptuous foods, human connections, and socializing. The bustling, passionate, and enthusiastic characteristics of these feasts demonstrate the power of caring and sharing in our society, regardless of social status or wealth. The “flowing water feast” was originally derived from a banquet scenario during which people come and go as they please, implicating its likeness to floating clouds and flowing waters, to share, be at ease, and feel satisfied. The texture and characteristics of watercolors may also be aptly interpreted in this context in its flow and fusion. If we separate the three words “flowing,” “water,” and “banquet,” they may respectively be metaphorical of the characteristics of change, texture and media, as well as invitation and hospitality. Likewise, the term may be viewed as the four dimensions of Flowing Water: The 2023 Taoyuan International Watercolor Biennial: experimental and innovative, subjective contemplation, the display of dialogues, and local characteristics.
